Unfortunately the French soccer team was eliminated by Spain today in the EURO 2012 tournament. Though France arrived with an accomplished 22 straight victories, their offensive play was not enough to carry them through to the semi-finals.

I was most fortunate to work for World Cup Orlando’s team, when our city hosted five World Cup games in 1994. It was an absolute thrill to be a part of the organization and to learn the incredible precision, logistics, planning, passion and security that goes into hosting international athletic events.

And it was just as thrilling four years later when France hosted and won the 1998 World Cup. Imagine my surprise in looking back over those games, when I learned that today is the birthday of France’s outstanding soccer player, Zinedine Zidane. In the final match against defending champion Brazil, Zidane scored 2 goals helping to defeat Brazil 3-0. In 2004 UEFA celebrated its’ 50th anniversary by commissioning a poll, in which he was voted the outstanding player of the last 50 years.

In light of today’s events, we offer France “C’est domage” and to Monsieur Zidane, “Bonne Anniversaire”.
